Press Here by Herve Tullet
This picture book has a sense of adventure and fun about it. It invites the reader to press the yellow button, add another yellow button, until there are three buttons and then presents another colour. Before you know it, there are five of each colour. Before a child knows it they are identifying yellow, blue and red. Every page invites a new action. The interactive element of the book invites the child to shake the book from side to side, press and tilt the pages and generally explore their imagination.
The bold illustrations and very clear text makes this a perfect book for a child to read. This hardback edition with its glossy pages and clear instructions is a joy to hold. There is also a smaller chunkier version of this book available but I prefer the bigger version. I experimented reading this book with a child who was a reluctant reader at the age of six. She liked it so much I had to buy the book for her.
Hervé is a French writer, visual artist and performer who was born in Normandy, France in 1958. He has written over eighty books. It is easy to see why this picture book 'Press Here' is hailed as a New York Times Bestseller. It is also not surprising that in France Hervé is known as the 'Prince of Preschool'. Hervé calls his books 'unfinished' because of the interaction he invites from the reader.
